On May 12, 1864 this shattered stump was a large oak tree in a rolling meadow just west of the Spotsylvania Court House. Early that morning 1200 entrenched troops under the command of General Robert E. Lee waited for the assault of 5000 Union troops from the Second Corps of the Army of the Potomac. Twenty hours later the once-peaceful meadow had aquired a new name, the Bloody Angle. The same rifle bullets that cut down 2,000 combatants tore away all twenty-two inches of the tree's trunk. Look closely and you can still the shape of the conical minie balls (bullets) still embedded in the wood. This came to symbolize the valor and heroism of a great battle. Where is Spotsylvania?

Lee's Special Orders No. 191 near Frederick, Maryland, on September 13, 1862, outlining the disposition of his thin and widespread Army of Northern Virginia, precipitated the Battle of Antietam four days later. The revelations of the orders, called the "Lost Order" in the North and the "Lost Dispatch" in the South, prompted Union commander Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan to pursue Lee's divided army and force that fateful clash from which the South never fully recovered. Who lost the Lost Order No.191? Which Union Fighting Regiment is credited with finding the Lost Order No. 191?
