Simple Gear

Step 1

Let's construct a simple gear.

  1. Open ProDesktop and open a New Design.
  2. Select Options and set units to inches.
  3. Sketch a circle 8 inches in diameter on the workplane.

  4. Extrude the circle to a depth of 1 inch and symmetric.

  5. Shift W to place the solid on the workplane. Create a new sketch and call it tooth.

  6. Create a verticle construction line from the center of the solid extending through the edge of the circle. Toggle to make it a construction line.
  7. Draw a tooth profile as shown. You'll only draw half of the tooth. Be sure to trim the line tangent to the circle as shown. We'll use the line mirror command to finsh the tooth profile.

  8. Add a construction line to complete the bottom of the tooth profile and trim away the excess lines. Next add the dimensions shown the figure below.

  9. Extrude the tooth to a distance of .75 and make sure it is symmetric and hit OK.

  10. To create the rest of the teeth you will pattern the tooth feature that you just created.
  11. Use the feature select tool to select the tooth.
  12. Go to Feature > Pattern. Use the select tool to sellect the outer edge of the gear body. Number of instances is 10 and the Angle is 360/10. See the box below for the constraints.

  13. Nice Work.

  14. Go ahead and put a hole in the center of the gear. Make the radius 1 inch.
  15. The gear is now complete. You can add more teeth by changing the pattern command using the redefine menu.
  16. Try changing the gear body thickness of the thickness of the tooth.
  17. How about adding rounds to the tips of the teeth and fillets to the base.

  18. If you are ready for the next challenge try the helical gear.
