Nutcracker

Step 1

Let's construct a simple machine, a nutcracker.

  1. Open thinkdesign and open a New Model . Close the History tree.
  2. Right click in workspace and select Options.
  3. Click on the General tab and set the unit of measure to Inches and OK the dialog box.

  4. Select the Polygon button from the Drafting toolbar.
  5. Set the Radius to 2 and Edges to 8 in the parameter area and hit Esc to exit the command.

  6. Drag the polygon to the center of the workspace.

  7. Change the color to 12.

  8. Right click a line segment and Select-Chain.
  9. Select Linear Solid Sweep and set the Depth to 1.

  10. Hit to create the solid.

  11. Rotate to check the depth of the Linear sweep.
  12. Double click on the face to set the Workplane and let's start working. First we'll construct a hole through the face.
  13. Select the Simple Hole command. Set Extension to thru all and Diameter at 1.625. Set Type from 2 edges and set the distances for 2.0 for both the first and second distances.

  14. Hit and Dynamically rotate the Solid.

  15. Dynamically rotate and place the Workplane on the top of the nutcracker.

  16. Select the Simple Hole command. Center a 0.5 Diameter hole through the top into the large hole. Select From-To under Extension and hit the interior side of the 1.625 Diameter hole as the End Face. The Start Face is the top of the nutcracker.

  17. Hit and exit the command.

  18. Dynamically rotate to make sure the hole did not penetrate the bottom of the nutcracker. The solid should now look like this.

  19. We'll now Chamfer the edges. Select Insert, Solid, Chamfer, Edge and set the Edges at 0.125 at

  20. Select each edge of the nutcracker when the cursor appears as an X. Set the front first, then rotate and select each edge on the back.

  21. Hit .

  22. Dynamically rotate to check that all edges have been chamfered.

  23. Let's position the threaded dowel next.

  24. Note: The Thread command enables you to add threads to the inner or outer parts of solids or features bounded by cylindrical surfaces. The thread can be applied to the entire surface or a specified length, or can extend between two selected edges.
The resulting thread is added as a dimension only. You don't actually see the thread in the model..

  25. Select Insert, Solid, Thread to add threads to the .05 hole.

  26. Select Radius Circle and set to 0.25 in the parameter area.

  27. Set the Radius on the Center Point snap of the 0.5 hole on the top of the nutcracker, then Escape to end the command.
You may need to Zoom in for a better view.

  28. Select Linear Solid next and select the circle as the profile. Set the Depth to 3.

  29. Hit to activate the command.

  30. Dynamically rotate your nutcracker and you're almost done.
Refer to step 24 concerning external threading on the dowel.

Let's build the handle in step 2.
